Zen "Dolphin Sound" Large Titanium Himalayan Singing Bowl
Size: ~8.75" diameter x 3.5" high
Weight: ~1130 grams
Average Rim Thickness: ~2.0 mm
The dolphin bowl earns its name from the sound it produces: a fluid, modulating call that rises and falls with the motion of water inside the bowl. It's an instrument that responds to your touch in real time, rewarding patience and a steady hand with one of the most distinctive voices in sound therapy.
Adding a dolphin sound to your daily practice introduces something most static instruments can't: dynamic, living movement. Where a struck bowl sustains a fixed tone, the dolphin bowl shifts and breathes, offering a focal point that engages both ear and hand. For practitioners, it's a versatile addition to sessions where you want to break up linear soundscapes and bring listeners' attention back into the room. For personal use, a few minutes of working the water can become a small daily reset, a way to settle into focus before moving on with your day.
These bowls are hammered from titanium, a metal valued for its strength-to-weight ratio. The result is a bowl that's remarkably light to hold and tilt, yet durable enough to handle the regular addition and removal of water without concern. Titanium's resonance also gives the bowl its clear, sustained tone, which provides an ideal foundation for the water modulation effect.
How to play
Water can be added to this bowl, and when combined with a slight motion, the water modulates the sound to produce a dolphin-like effect. The amount of water needed will vary based on the height and thickness of your bowl. Start with about 3/4" of water and add or remove to find your preferred sound.
A note on practice
The dolphin sound takes time to develop. Each bowl varies slightly in height, thickness, and resonance, and each player will find their own rhythm of motion. Expect to experiment with water levels and tilt before landing on the sound you want. This is part of the instrument's character, not a limitation.
