Thetazen Cascara Pangi Shaker Chime
Dimensions: 20" length
Weight: ~510 grams
The Thetazen Cascara Pangi Shaker Chime is a handcrafted percussion instrument with a commanding presence — substantial in weight, rich in sound, and striking in appearance. Dozens of Pangi seed shells are strung together in a full, cascading cluster and suspended from a woven organic fiber handle — creating an instrument that delivers a deep, grounded percussive voice unlike any other natural shaker. Measuring 20" in total hang length and weighing approximately 510 grams, the Cascara Pangi has a satisfying, earthy heft in the hand and produces a bold, resonant rattle that fills the space with every movement. As a handmade item, slight variations in seed shape, tone, and density are natural and give each piece its own character.
The Pangi seed comes from Pangium edule, a towering evergreen tree native to the rainforests and mangrove swamps of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and the wider Malesian archipelago. Deeply significant across the region, the Pangi tree has been woven into the food traditions, medicine, and material culture of Southeast Asian communities for generations. Because the tree takes up to 15 years to bear fruit, most seeds are still hand-harvested from wild trees — making each shell a product of old-growth forest and time. The hard, fibrous seed shell, with its distinctive grooved surface and triangular form, produces a sound prized for its depth and clarity, carrying the weight of the earth it grew from.
Held by the looped woven handle, the Cascara Pangi can be shaken, swept, or gently swayed to produce everything from a slow, deliberate knock to a thunderous, cascading rattle — making it a powerful and versatile tool for sound therapy sessions, rhythmic practice, and performance alike.
