Thetazen Cascara Mixed Shaker Chime
Dimensions: 14" length
Weight: ~315 grams
The Thetazen Cascara Mixed Shaker Chime brings together the best of three worlds — Kenari, Bendo, and Pangi seed shells combined into a single, richly layered percussion instrument. Strung together in a full, cascading cluster and suspended from a woven organic fiber handle, this mixed composition creates a complex, textured soundscape that no single seed variety can achieve on its own. Measuring 14" in total hang length and weighing approximately 315 grams, the Cascara Mixed has a balanced, satisfying heft in the hand and produces a multi-dimensional rattle — airy and warm from the Kenari, hollow and resonant from the Bendo, and deep and grounded from the Pangi — all unfolding together with every shake and sweep. As a handmade item, slight variations in seed shape, tone, and arrangement are natural and give each piece its own character.
Each of the three seeds carries its own origin story rooted in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The Kenari seed, harvested from the Canarium tree across Indonesia and the Pacific Islands, contributes a soft, flowing brightness. The Bendo, from the Artocarpus elasticus tree native to Java, Borneo, and Malaysia, adds a warm, hollow clarity. The Pangi, hand-harvested from wild Pangium edule trees across the Indonesian archipelago and Papua New Guinea, brings a deep, earthy resonance that anchors the entire blend. Together, they represent a lineage of natural body percussion instruments that have accompanied dance, ceremony, and ritual across the region for generations.
Held by the looped woven handle, the Cascara Mixed can be shaken, swept, or gently swayed to produce a full spectrum of natural sound — from a delicate, layered whisper to a lush, cascading rattle — making it an exceptionally versatile and expressive tool for sound therapy sessions, rhythmic practice, and creative performance.
